The European Commission has initiated work to develop a label for retreaded C3 tyres commonly found on trucks and buses. The retreading of tyres extends their useful lifespan and contributes to circular economy objectives, such as waste reduction. Introducing a label for these tyres would bring substantial energy and material savings and expand the circular economy.
In response to an industry proposal received in October 2022 for the labelling of retreaded C3 tyres, the Commission launched a study by an independent test laboratory to assess the validity and feasibility of the industry proposal. This study was completed in mid-2024 and published in August.
Now the Commission is working to develop a labelling proposal for retreaded tyres based on this and additional work, including an impact assessment. This supplemental work is being carried out by Viegand Maagøe for the European Commission, DG ENER.
